Here come Vietnam's first domestically made cars

A contest was held with 20 proposals from famed design houses. Pininfarina won.
Khodrocar - Vietnam's first car company wants rapid expansion in the ASEAN market, and hopes to sell 500,000 vehicles per year by 2025. Now we have an idea of what their first two cars will look like.

If you think half a million vehicles in seven years' time seems like an ambitious goal, you'd be right. In addition to a 7-seater SUV and sedan, however, Vinfast plans to pad its numbers with electric motorcycles as well, as two-wheelers are still a primary mode of transportation for many in southeast Asian countries.

However, Vinfast is serious about building cars, and it recently it held a contest to determine how they will look like. Twenty submissions were received by renowned design houses around the world. Vinfast then held a contest across the country, and received about 62,000 votes. The winner was this SUV and sedan pair, both designed by Pininfarina.

The sketches showcase Pininfarina's considerable skills and offer proof as to why automakers as far ranging as Fiat, Peugeot, GM and Ferrari have all commissioned their work. Of course, concept sketches do not always translate into reality perfectly.

We won't have to wait long to see the result, though. Vinfast plans to launch their first car in September 2019.
